Sudan

The people of Sudan suffered through more than two decades of civil war before a fragile peace agreement was reached in 2005. Samaritan’s Purse has been helping the people of Sudan since 1997, providing food, shelter, clean water, agriculture assistance, education, church reconstruction, medical aid, and vocational training programs.

PROJECTS

Church Rebuilding Program
Samaritan’s Purse is working side-by-side with local congregations to help rebuild churches that were destroyed during two decades of civil war. More than 419 churches have been rebuilt across the nation.

Water Sanitation
Samaritan’s Purse is coordinating an effort to drill wells in villages throughout central Sudan, supplying thousands of families with a source of clean, safe water.

Kurmuk Hospital
Since 2002, Samaritan's Purse has helped support Kurmuk Hospital, a 100-bed secondary health care facility in the Blue Nile region. The hospital provides life-saving medical care to more than 220,000 people. Kurmuk Hospital provides essential medical services in an area where health care is virtually non-existent. More than 300 inpatient and 600 outpatient services are provided each month at the hospital.

Animal Husbandry and Agricultural Training
Samaritan's Purse has been involved in animal husbandry activities in the Southern Blue Nile since 2003. Through goat restocking for displaced populations as well as genetic enhancement rotation programs, stronger animal populations have been seen to grow in this region where animals are prized. Through vaccination and awareness campaigns, Samaritan's Purse is able to add further value to this life-giving source of nutrition and income. A model farm has been established as a base of operations to train local farmers in the practices and advantages of irrigated farming for dry-season cultivation.

Appropriate Technology Initiatives
Funded by the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), this program began in 2004 to provide agricultural enhancement training for people living in central Sudan. Training has included improved honey harvesting, ground nut shelling and paste making, solar drying, and fuel efficient stove use. Energy-saving stoves reduce firewood consumption by 75 percent. Technologies introduced to the communities include bee hives, solar dryers, peanut butter makers, and oil presses. Thirty-six groups have been trained, with another five currently undergoing training.

Life Skills Training Initiatives
This Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA)-funded program provides training in automotive mechanics, welding, masonry, and construction to assist returnees who have experienced internal displacement and are recovering from the country’s 21-year civil war. In coordination with community leaders, Samaritan’s Purse selects trainees with the ambition of learning new skills to provide needed services for the community. Beneficiaries are trained in a skill that will assist the community in the reintegration and rebuilding process currently underway in central Sudan. Greater investment in residences and businesses fosters a greater desire for peace. We have trained 34 welders and established 17 welding shops. Thirty-three mechanics have been trained, including 11 women. Fifteen people are receiving masonry training.
