World Medical Mission, the medical arm of Samaritan’s Purse, places Protestant Christian physicians and dentists for short term assignments at evangelical mission hospitals and clinics around the world.

General Surgeon

Kibogora Hospital - Rwanda — Kibogora Hospital Kibogora Hospital is a 279 bed facility, (75) Post-surgery, (64) Pediatric, (51) Internal Medicine, (45) Maternity, (6) Neonatal, (7) Emergency room, (18) Isolation and (13) Nutrition, located 100 miles southwest of the capital city of Kigali, overlooking Lake Kivu and Zaire. Physician staff as of 2010 includes (11) GPs and (1) pediatrician. All are either Rwandan or Congolese. Most speak adequate English. There are also (3) trained CRNAs usually available and several OR technicians. In addition there is one expatriate RN at Kibogora long term. There is an eye clinic staffed by (1) Rwandan eye nurse and a dental clinic staffed by (2) Rwandan dental technicians.

Surgery: There is one main OR and an adjacent “minor” treatment room. Surgeries are done every day, averaging 4 per day. Equipment includes: Cardiac monitor/defibrillator, oxygen, suction, bovie, and dermatome. The OR is equipped with basic surgical instrument packs. Basic suture materials are usually available. Sterile operating gloves are usually available unless the surgeon needs an unusual size. There are a limited number of external fixators for orthopedics. No laparoscopy is available. There is also an OR adjacent to the maternity ward that is used for C sections.

Anesthesia: Spinal, Ketamine, local and general.

Radiology/Ultrasound: X-ray with digital developer. Typical X-ray and barium contrasts. The radiographer at Kibogora also does EKGs. There are (2) well trained X-ray technicians. Ultrasound equipment consists of (1) FF Sonic 5500 & (1) Ultramark 4+. One machine is located in maternity and the other in the operating room.

The individual volunteer is responsible for all costs associated with the trip. World Medical Mission personnel will provide assistance in arranging all travel including international flights and in-country travel as well as any needed medical licenses, visas or permits.

Kibogora has no long term general surgeon and thus relies on short term volunteers to meet their surgical needs. There are no general surgeons currently scheduled for service at Kibogora March - May 2012. Kibogora will accept for a minimum three week commitment.
