Sudan: A Moment of Truth
The week before I went to Haiti, I visited the Nuba Mountains of Sudan for the first graduation at the Bible school built and operated by Samaritan’s Purse. What a proud day it was for the pastors and evangelists who have trained for three years under an international faculty. Not only are they strong voices for the Gospel, but they are exactly the kind of leaders that Sudan needs.
We’ve seen God’s hand at work in Sudan in many ways. In the past five years, He has enabled Samaritan’s Purse to rebuild over 360 churches destroyed during the recent civil war, allowed us to feed multitudes in Darfur and the Beja lands, and made it possible for us to air Gospel programming on national TV. God even opened doors for me to meet three times with President Omar al-Bashir on behalf of the millions of Christians in his country.
Now this troubled nation is facing a moment of truth. The week after Easter, April 5-12, Sudan will hold its first national elections since the 2005 comprehensive peace agreement that ended the civil war. The results will set the stage for another vote in 2011, when the people of South Sudan could declare their independence and become a new nation.
Church leaders in Sudan are praying fervently that God will use the upcoming election to further the peace process. However, given the political situation, they also realize the election could trigger renewed conflict in South Sudan and Darfur.
Now is the time for prayer warriors to lift up our fellow believers in Sudan. Church leaders in Sudan have asked me to call on Christians around the world to participate in a week of prayer March 21-27, culminating with a Global Day of Prayer for Sudan on Palm Sunday, March 28. Above all, please pray that people all across Sudan will find true peace through the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ.
