Our Programs

International Workshops

Through Prescription for Hope workshops, Christian leaders learn positive, compassionate, culturally relevant ways to talk to their communities about HIV/AIDS.

  • Workshop sessions are based on Biblical principles with practical topics such as: HIV/AIDS basic facts, marital faithfulness, home care programs, reducing discrimination, and overcoming the fear of testing.

  • Since 2003, our workshops have trained and equipped more than 4,500 church and community leaders in 19 countries.

  • Upon completion of the workshop, participants are given toolkits and other resources to share what they have learned with their communities.

HIV Testing

More than 80 percent of people living with HIV in low and middle-income countries do not know they are infected.

  • Prescription for Hope began its first voluntary counseling and testing program, the Samaritan Center, in Honduras in 2005.

  • Before being tested, an individual meets with a trained counselor who explains the test, gives them HIV/AIDS basic facts, and discusses their test result.

  • HIV testing is available during the Prescription for Hope workshops, as well as at sites in Honduras, Liberia, and Mozambique. In other countries, Prescription for Hope partners with local, established testing sites.

Compassionate Care

Our Compassionate Care programs provide physical, emotional, social, and spiritual care for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

  • In many countries, people living with HIV/AIDS are not accepted by their own families and are ostracized from their communities.

  • Individuals are shown the love of Christ by volunteers who visit their homes and provide basic necessities such as clean water and food.

  • Stigma is reduced when communities see Christians interacting with infected individuals.

Youth Prevention Education

It is estimated that youth aged 15-24 account for 45 percent of new HIV infections.

  • Prescription for Hope’s youth program trains leaders in more than 480 communities throughout Ecuador, Ethiopia, Honduras, Kenya, Mozambique, and Uganda.

  • Through Biblically-based prevention education, our goal is to reach 700,000 young people in five years.

  • Activities focus on abstinence before marriage and faithfulness in marriage, which we believe to be the best prevention strategy.

Orphans and Vulnerable Children

Over 15 million children worldwide have lost one or both of their parents to AIDS.

  • We equip local churches and communities to take care of children’s needs instead of placing them in orphanages.

  • We offer comprehensive care for children by providing school fees and supplies, food, clean water, spiritual care, health care, and legal services.

  • We provide vocational training for caretakers and older youth.

Maternal and Child Health

More than 10.5 million children under five die from preventable causes every year.

  • Prescription for Hope is educating mothers on safer infant-feeding methods and other healthy practices.

  • Our program focuses on common health issues, including diarrhea, malnutrition, and prevention of HIV transmission from mother to child.

  • Using simple lessons, Samaritan’s Purse teaches volunteers who are then responsible for sharing with 10 other households. This method saturates entire communities with life-saving health messages.

Family and Economic Stability

It is estimated that 1.4 billion people in the developing world live on less than $1.25 per day.

  • Prescription for Hope helps individuals overcome their situation by providing a steady source of income.

  • Projects such as vocational training, agriculture support, and livestock initiatives give families practical ways to sustain themselves.

  • For HIV-positive people, these programs help restore dignity and create stability at home.
