Salvaging Hope Out of RubbleDavid Torres, team leader for the Samaritan's Purse Disaster Assistance Response Team, wrote about the scene in Haiti for the Taos News, his hometown newspaper.
“The scene is surreal,” he wrote. “Pedestrians overwhelm the streets, choking off the few cars that have fuel to keep operating. Some are still looking for loved ones, others seem to be walking without purpose. They form silhouettes against the haze that has settled on the city of Port-au-Prince. The haze has a nightmarish, post-apocalyptic quality.
“It’s the kind that’s unrelenting and grips your soul in a vice in the middle of the night, no matter how hard you try to wake up. It’s not only a haze of the spirit — it permeates the lungs. Small bonfires line the streets, some attended, others not. Most are merely burning rubbish, but the fires don’t spread because the concrete debris suffocates any meandering flames.”
