Sudan
During decades of vicious civil war, more than 2 million people lost their lives and thousands of communities were destroyed. Samaritan’s Purse has been helping the people of Sudan since 1997, by providing food, shelter, clean water, agriculture assistance, education, medical aid, and vocational training programs. In Darfur, we have fed 220,000 people who were forced from their homes by government-backed militias. In 2005, we launched a major church reconstruction project for Christians in South Sudan who suffered violent persecution.

Wells for Churches
Thousands of Sudanese Christians were killed by Islamic troops and village churches were destroyed during two decades of bloody civil war. Samaritan’s Purse is working side-by-side with local congregations to help rebuild their churches, their lives, and the nation. More than 220 churches have been rebuilt across South Sudan.
Child Friendly Spaces/Youth Centers
A South Darfur preschool program featuring art, music, recreation, and psycho-social support is benefiting 8,000 children.
Adult Education and Livelihoods
Women in the South Darfur towns of Sheria, Abujara, and Nyala are being trained to produce products to sell in local markets to provide support for themselves and their families. They gain business skills and knowledge through adult education. The project has benefited 3,632 vulnerable women.
Food and Essential Items
Samaritan's Purse has distributed food, clothing, shelter materials, and other essential items to 220,000 people in South Darfur province who have been displaced or otherwise affected by civil war and instability.
Agriculture and Food Security
We are helping impoverished families in South Darfur grow their food through distributions of seeds, hand tools, and donkey plows. Village veterinary training, rainwater harvesting construction, seed multiplication education, and community training also are being provided. The project has benefited 139,905 people.
Water Sanitation
In South Darfur we are helping to provide clean, safe water for 112,656 people in East Jebel Marra, South Sharia, and Nyala, through hand-pump maintenance, capacity building, hygiene promotion, latrine construction, and maintenance of hand-dug wells.
Kurmuk Hospital
Since 2002, Samaritan's Purse has helped support Kurmuk Hospital, a 100-bed secondary health care facility in the Southern Blue Nile. The hospital provides life-saving medical care to more than 220,000 people. Kurmuk Hospital provides essential medical services in an area where healthcare is virtually non-existent. More than 300 inpatient and 600 outpatient services are provided each month at the hospital.
Animal Husbandry and Agricultural Training
Samaritan's Purse has been involved in animal husbandry activities in the Southern Blue Nile since 2003. Through goat restocking for displaced populations as well as genetic enhancement rotation programs, stronger animal populations have been seen to grow in this region, where animals are prized. Through vaccination and awareness campaigns, Samaritan's Purse is able to add further value to this life-giving source of nutrition and income. A model farm has been established as a base of operations to train local farmers in the practices and advantages of irrigated farming for dry-season cultivation.
Appropriate Technology Initiatives
Funded by the Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), this program began in 2004 to provide agricultural enhancement training for people living in the Nuba Mountains. Training has included improved honey harvesting, ground nut shelling and paste making, solar drying, and fuel efficient stove use. Energy-saving stoves reduce firewood consumption by 75 percent. Technologies introduced to the communities include bee hives, solar dryers, peanut butter makers, and oil presses. Thirty-six groups have been trained, with another five currently undergoing training.
Life Skills Training Initiatives
This Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA)-funded program provides training in automotive mechanics, welding, masonry, and construction to assist returnees who have experienced internal displacement and are recovering from the country’s 21-year civil war. In coordination with community leaders, Samaritan’s Purse selects trainees with the ambition of learning new skills to provide needed services for the community. Beneficiaries are trained in a skill that will assist the community in the reintegration and rebuilding process currently underway in the Nuba Mountains. Greater investment in residences and businesses fosters a greater desire for peace. We have trained 34 welders and established 17 welding shops. Thirty-three mechanics have been trained, including 11 women. Fifteen people are receiving masonry training.
PRAYER REQUESTS
Please pray for the stability of the security situation and safety of our staff in North Sudan as we work in a volatile area. Pray that we would show the love of Christ, and that God will be glorified in all what we do. Pray for an end to the conflict in Darfur, and for wisdom and strength for all of our staff.
For lasting peace.
For the 250,000 people who have received Bibles in South Sudan and the 8,000 who have been trained to lead Bible studies. Pray that God would continue to reveal Himself to the people of Sudan through His Word.
