Franklin Graham visited Samaritan's Purse medical projects and pledged more aid for the country during his third visit to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) Oct. 13-15.
Samaritan’s Purse has provided more than $10 million in medical and dental equipment and other assistance in North Korea since 1997. Graham’s latest visit coincided with the delivery of $190,000 worth of dental equipment to outfit a school that can train up to 70 rural dentists a year.
“We're going to continue to help them with dental centers, we're going to continue to help them with a number of projects where we can,” he said in an interview with Greta Van Susteren of Fox News, who accompanied Graham on the visit. “I want to try to build bridges of understanding between the United States and the people of the DPRK.”

Tensions remain high between the secretive communist nation and the U.S. Graham said he believes visits like this one can help bring about understanding.
“I'm here as a private citizen wanting to help this country, but at the same time to try to encourage our two countries to speak face to face,” he said. “This is a dangerous situation, a country that is developing nuclear weapons, that has already tested them, and we just cannot ignore this part of the world. We have to talk to these people. We need to build bridges of trust and understanding, which I believe will lead eventually to friendship.”

Shortly after arriving, Graham met with several high-ranking officials, including Kim Kye-Gwan, the DPRK Vice Foreign Minister and his country’s representative at the six-party talks between the U.S., Russia, China, Japan, and the two Koreas.
“I spoke to Deputy Foreign Minister Kim about things of faith, about giving more freedom to the people of faith of this nation,” Graham said. “And he listened.”
Graham visited the same hospital he toured during his last visit 14 months ago. Then, the delegation saw doctors operating in near darkness, having to rely on sunlight seeping through windows. Graham pledged then to provide electricity for the facility. Using funding from USAID, Samaritan's Purse purchased and installed generators.
On this visit, the operating room had plenty of light.
“It is good to come back and see that generator installed and producing electricity for the operating room and for other areas of the hospital,” Graham said.
