Equipping An Evangelist

A new bicycle will make it easier for a man to spread the Good News in rural villages in Honduras

Like everyone in the household water filter program in La Paz, Hector was required to contribute some “sweat equity.”

Recipients participate by helping construct the concrete bases for the filters, or washing the sand and rocks that make up the purifying layers. This gives them a sense of ownership, making them more likely to take care of and use the filter to provide clean, safe water.

Hector would always go beyond what was expected. He helped in the construction and installation process, always with a smile on his face. He became a volunteer leader, bringing more people into the project and helping with training.

The reason for Hector’s willingness to go the extra mile soon became obvious. He was overflowing with the love of Jesus. He was excited that a Christian organization had come his community, and wanted to do everything he could to help Samaritan’s Purse convey God’s love in word and deed.

Hector already was actively involved in evangelism. He would hold street meetings in surrounding villages, using a portable microphone. He would walk many miles between each community to share the Gospel.

Hector’s passion was so contagious that our staff decided to help. We provided a bicycle to make it easier to travel between villages, and an audio Bible that he uses on weekly visits to his neighbors.

“He has used this with several elderly people who cannot leave their homes and either can’t see well enough or can’t read to be able to share the Bible with them,” a staff member said.

Hector is also a small-group leader for a new discipleship program called Nuevo Vida en Cristo (New Life in Christ), using materials from Samaritan’s Purse.

“With his passion for the Gospel and with the materials we have helped provide, he is taking full advantage of this opportunity,” the staff member said.
