Domingo Mamani, a farmer in Bolivia’s highlands, had once been able to make a living planting and harvesting cañagua. The grain, high in protein, vitamins, and minerals, is a common ingredient in local breakfast foods. But when good quality seed became scarce, livelihoods of farmers like Domingo dwindled and malnutrition among children skyrocketed.

When Samaritan’s Purse staff noticed a hike in malnutrition cases, our staff purchased improved seed and sold it to farmers at half its market price.

Domingo purchased 4.5 pounds of the seed and underwent training in improved agricultural practices and pest management. As a result, he saw a 700 percent increase in crops this year — enough to nourish his three grandchildren and share his harvest with relatives, neighbors, and the community.

Domingo, his wife, and three grandchildren sell cañagua to communities in Bolivia's highlands.
As Samaritan’s Purse staff follows up with cañagua farmers, they explain Jesus’ parable of the talents. When residents become curious about the man who exercised such great wisdom, staff members have an opportunity to share the Good News of the Gospel.

For more than three decades, Samaritan’s Purse has followed Christ’s command found in the story of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-37) by providing food and agricultural training to the world’s poor, sick, and suffering. As we observe World Food Day on Oct. 16, our staff members around the world are bringing food to refugees, school children, and farmers who lack the resources and knowledge to employ improved agricultural methods.

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink… I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:35-40, NIV).
