Relief for Typhoon Survivors

Samaritan’s Purse works through church partners to deliver desperately needed supplies to storm victims in the Philippines, Cambodia, and Vietnam

Pastor Joey Reyes and members of Metro-Laguna Baptist Church asked God to help them reach out to people struggling to recover in the aftermath of Typhoon Ketsana.

After they prayed, they became aware of an evacuation center in a low-lying neighborhood in Calamba, a city a couple of hours outside Manila. The center, located in a school, housed 100 displaced families who had little to eat.

“The Lord led us to this place,” Pastor Reyes said.

The neighborhood remained flooded more than two weeks after the typhoon struck, with chest-high water in some areas. People were living on the rooftops of their houses, because the lower floors were uninhabitable.

Pastor Reyes and his church saw the need when they visited the neighborhood. They wanted to help, but didn't know how.

“We had nothing to give them,” he said.

Samaritan's Purse learned of the need through a Manila-based pastors’ alliance, and delivered 200 food packets containing rice, noodles, canned meat, beans, sugar, coffee, hand soap, and laundry detergent to Pastor Reyes’ church. Each parcel is designed to be a three-day supply for a family of four.

Samaritan's Purse continues to work through church partners in the Philippines, Cambodia, and Vietnam to deliver aid those affected by Typhoon Ketsana and Typhoon Parma.

“The Lord is at work,” Pastor Reyes said. “My heart is touched that you are in my country, taking care of our people.”

In the Philippines, our team has worked with more than 100 churches in 30 towns spread across eight provinces. Our partners report that hundreds of people have responded to the Gospel message with professions of faith in Christ.
