Responding to Urgent Needs in Samoa
Samaritan’s Purse sends relief after tsunami waves and quakes strike the island nation
Samaritan's Purse disaster teams are in the Samoan islands, delivering desperately needed relief after tsunami waves and earthquakes left hundreds dead and thousands without homes.
As the country mourns, our team is providing emergency support in the form of food, water, shelter, and basic medical care.
“They need our help and prayers,” said a member of our team. “They’re broken inside having lost all of their possessions and some of their loved ones.”
On Sept. 29, an 8.3 magnitude quake caused a tsunami that tore through the South Pacific islands of Samoa, American Samoa, and Tonga. A wall of water up to 35 feet high flattened villages and swept people and cars out to sea.
Our team in Samoa has distributed relief supplies to nearly 2,000 people in 14 villages.
With the help of local church partners, mosquito nets and kitchen kits with soap, detergent, cups, spoons, plates, bowls, towels, and wash basins were also given to families in need.
"Words can't express our appreciation for what you are doing for us," a Samoan pastor said.
