Wells for Churches
The rugged Nuba Mountains are a unique part of central Sudan—home to tens of thousands of Christians surrounded by millions of Muslims.

In the 1980s, when government troops tried to impose Islamic law on the nation, Nuba Christians were easy targets. Over 160 churches were destroyed, many believers were massacred, and survivors hid for months or even years in the rocky crags.

Since the Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed in 2005 and the people began returning to their burned-out villages, Samaritan’s Purse has been working to rebuild each church that the government destroyed. Now, our goal is to drill a well near every new church in the Nuba Mountains, supplying the village with a source of clean and safe water and providing local believers with a fresh way to witness to their neighbors.

May through October is the rainy season in the region. Hillsides turn green, farmers plant sorghum, and streams tumble through the valleys. The rest of the year often passes without a drop of rain. Plants wither under the scorching sun. Rivers dry up, and people dig holes deep in the riverbeds to get even a bucket of muddy, stagnant water.

In that setting, a freshwater well where people gather and Christians are on hand to present the Gospel can help introduce thousands of people to God’s gift of salvation in the same way that Jesus offered “living water” to the woman at the well. “Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14, NIV).

A basic well-drilling rig suited for this part of Africa costs about $2 million. That one rig can save lives and alleviate suffering for tens of thousands of families. If we drill 200 wells, each well that can provide water for up to 500 people costs about $10,000. That’s only $20 per person—an investment for a lifetime of clean water.
