Samaritan’s Purse prepares to provide clean water to thousands of people in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains
May through October is the rainy season in the rugged Nuba Mountains of central Sudan. Hillsides turn green, farmers plant sorghum, and streams tumble through the valleys.
The rest of the year often passes without a drop of rain. Plants wither under the scorching sun. Rivers dry up, and people dig holes deep in the riverbeds to get even a bucket of muddy water.
Samaritan’s Purse is coordinating an effort to drill wells in villages throughout the Nuba Mountains, supplying thousands of families with a source of clean, safe water.
A basic well-drilling rig suited for this part of Africa costs about $2 million. That one rig can save lives and alleviate suffering for tens of thousands of people.
We can drill 200 wells, each serving a village of 500 people, at a cost of $10,000 per well. That’s only $20 per person—an investment for a lifetime of clean water.
