A narrow river crosses the small property where Jose Heriberto Guzman lives with his wife, Maria, and their three children. He used to think of the river as a blessing. It provided water for his crops and the family’s daily household needs.

But in the last several years, the river has become a source of aggravation and destruction. It flooded Jose’s land and destroyed his crops so frequently that he could no longer farm the property.

He tried to set up a fish farm, but without proper training his efforts failed and the family had to rely on others to meet their basic needs.

Then Jose heard that Samaritan’s Purse was starting a fish project in his area. He contacted our volunteers and was accepted into the program. Jose and his family now maintain a fishpond, started with 250 tilapia. The fish are easy to sell in this region and, with proper care and maintenance of the pond, can be a source of income for years to come.

Fish farms are one of our many animal projects in Honduras designed to alleviate poverty and create economic independence. Samaritan’s Purse provides goats, chickens, cattle, and other animals in communities throughout the country. Participants receive training in caring for their livestock, and agree to return one female offspring so the project can be expanded to a neighboring community. So far, 500 families like the Guzmans have benefited from this project.

Most importantly, as our staff follows up with these families they are able to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd, who modeled care and concern for all people.

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand” (John 10:27-28, NIV)

    PLEASE PRAY

  • For opportunities to share the Gospel with those involved in our animal projects.

  • For the Guzman family and other recipients, that God will continue to fulfill their physical and spiritual needs.

  • That our livestock and agricultural programs around the world will introduce many people to the Good Shepherd.
