Life can be very lonely for a teenager who can neither hear nor speak. Sanjeev (not his real name) was shunned by people in his rural village in western Sri Lanka. He had not received a formal education because of his disability and was unable to find a job. The 18-year-old clung to hope that someone would give him a chance.
A dairy program started in Sanjeev’s village by one of our ministry partners and supported by Samaritan’s Purse presented him with that opportunity. He participated in a three-day training session and learned quickly through visual aids and on-site demonstrations. In fact, Sanjeev’s enthusiasm and abilities made him one of the standouts among the students.
Sanjeev was recruited for a seven-day practical training session with a farmer from the village. To build up his confidence in working with others, he was invited to attend monthly meetings with program staff. Samaritan’s Purse gave him 5,000 rupees (about $50) for start-up costs, including money for a quality cattle shelter that local farmers helped him construct.
Through a loan system, Sanjeev received 40,000 rupees from our ministry partner for purchasing a cow. Monthly evaluations showed his new-found occupation was turning a profit, and Sanjeev was rewarded with another cow free of charge.
His small dairy business has become quite the model of success. Today Sanjeev earns about 4,000 rupees per month through daily milk sales to the nearby collection center. He is gradually overcoming his social anxieties, and interacts more readily with people in the community.
Residents of the village marvel at the changes they see in this young man. Best of all, his experiences have become a testimony to the love of God who values every human being and gave His Son for all.
-
For the dairy program in Sri Lanka to provide income and food resources for the desperately poor.
- That Sanjeev and others who are marginalized by society will know they are loved and valued by God.
-
For other vocational programs supported by Samaritan’s Purse in Sri Lanka.
