Larry was just a baby when his mother tried to sell him on the streets of Shillong.
Thankfully, Larry was rescued by the house mother from Iingsara, a Christian boys home supported by Samaritan’s Purse. He’s grown up under her guidance, and Larry, now 11, has a place to sleep, food to eat, and an education.
Iingsara was founded by a couple from Calcutta named Wai and Rose Hu, known to Larry and the rest of the children as “Uncle Wai” and “Auntie Rose.”
Larry only knows that Wai and Rose enjoy spending time with him and the other boys. What he doesn’t know is that they have dedicated a lifetime to helping children.
Wai and Rose are well educated and talented. They could have chosen to follow family members and peers to the West, leaving behind the destitute faces of Calcutta’s streets. They could have chosen to forget about the children with ragged clothes and dirty faces who have little hope for the future.

But Wai and Rose still live in the heart of Calcutta, in the apartment where Rose was born, in a part of the city where rats wander the streets after nightfall and where homeless people sleep on sidewalks.
Rose did live in London for a short time. It was there that she received a call from Samaritan’s Purse founder Dr. Bob Pierce, asking her to go back home—asking her to join with Samaritan’s Purse to care for India’s children.
“I was called to be a missionary to my own people,” Rose said. “I had to give up all my bargaining points with God and just submit to Him and His will. There were no more conditions attached to my service; I just wanted to serve.”
Through our partnership with local ministries, Samaritan’s Purse is been able to provide food, education, lodging, and health care for some of India’s poorest children. As we work with the Hus and other believers, a generation of boys and girls are coming to faith in Jesus Christ. Please pray that as they grow, they will impact their communities, country, and culture for Christ.
- For local partners like the Hus, who are on the front lines of ministry in difficult places.
- That the children in our programs will come to know Jesus Christ as a result of the compassion and love shown by Christians caring form them.
- That the Lord would raise up other Indians to reach out to the children of their country.
