Life is hard for the Bedouin people of Jordan. Living in tents in a desert environment that alternates between extreme heat and intolerable cold causes many to suffer from a variety of ailments that often lead to death before they reach old age.

Poverty keeps them from seeking quality medical care, with the disabled often suffering the most from this lack of resources.

As a handicapped Bedouin child, 8-year-old Aisha spent her early years completely immobile on the dirt floor of her family’s tent. She was born with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck. Doctors, expecting her to die, failed to provide the necessary treatment to lessen the damage caused by the lack of oxygen to her brain.

With five other children to care for, Aisha’s mother, Sultan, does the best she can for her disabled child.

“I can never leave her alone,” Sultan said. “I have to make sure her diaper is changed regularly, and I must spoon feed her small amounts of baby cereal.”

When Aisha developed a respiratory problem, Sultan did not know what to do. Then someone told her about the Annoor Sanatorium for Chest Diseases.

“They said I would find people there who would care about us,” she said.

Desperate to get good care for her daughter, Sultan brought Aisha to the hospital.

Samaritan’s Purse has supported Annoor Sanatorium for more than three decades. The facility has been recognized by the World Health Organization and others for its high-quality, compassionate care for those suffering from tuberculosis and other diseases. The staff works hard to bring comfort and healing to their patients while sharing God’s love and the Good News of salvation.

Aisha received the treatment she needed and was also sent home with a new wheelchair, food, and milk. Hospital staff still visits them regularly to bring food and the compassion of Christ.

“I am so thankful that they love Aisha,” Sultan said.
