Like the woman at the well, Nellie thought her greatest need was water. But like the woman in John 4, she encountered Jesus and received something of infinitely greater value.
Nellie lives in Gavion, a squatter settlement of about 100 houses in San Pedro Sula. Their water comes from a river and six shallow wells. A sewage canal runs alongside the community. It overflows after heavy rains, contaminating the water supply.
Samaritan's Purse is installing a household filter in every residence in Gavion. The filters remove harmful bacteria, allowing the residents to use water from the wells, the river, and rainwater for all of their needs.
The recipients must attend hygiene workshops, where they learn how health can be improved by using clean water, the importance of hand washing, and trash disposal.
Nellie attended one of the workshops with her teen-aged daughter Sylvia so they could sign up for the program. They were excited about receiving a filter that would give them clean, safe water.
Misael, the project manager, met with Nellie and Sylvia and told them they could have much more. If they repented and turned to Jesus, they could have the living water of eternal life.
Both Nellie and Sylvia accepted Christ as Savior. When they returned home Nellie’s son, Jose, saw how happy they were and wanted to accept Christ too.
“I have gone to church and heard about Jesus, but today I clearly understood what Christ did for me,” Nellie said. “I’m truly thankful that Jesus is my Savior. I feel very fulfilled and satisfied. I know that everything has changed. I feel different. ”
Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14, NASB).
- That Nellie and her children will impact their neighbors with their enthusiasm for their new faith.
- That everyone who receives a water filter in Gavion will also recognize the eternal benefits of salvation through Christ.
- For our evangelism-oriented programs in Honduras to clearly communicate the Gospel.
