As Dr. Mary surveyed the half-empty bottles of medicine arrayed on the small table in front of her, she worried that soon she would have to stop treating the desperate people who were streaming into the church daily looking for help.

A 5-year-old girl suffering from diarrhea and dehydration sat across from the doctor. “How many more of these young ones will come?” she wondered. When she finished treating the child, she dropped to her knees and prayed.

Tens of thousands of people were killed overnight when Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar’s Irrawaddy Delta in early May. In the weeks following the disaster, some 2 million, mostly children, found themselves at risk of death from malnutrition, exposure, and disease. Many of them made their way to churches, hoping to find the basic necessities that would sustain them.

Storm survivors were often greeted by caring Christians like Mary, who volunteered their time to serve their suffering neighbors. Although willing to work long hours to bandage wounds and treat illness, the doctor initially had difficulty finding and paying for medicine and other items.

When Samaritan’s Purse staff members in Myanmar were told of the need, they immediately stocked Mary’s one-room, makeshift clinic with the supplies necessary to continue her work.

Since the cyclone, Samaritan’s Purse has stood with the Christians in Myanmar as they provide emergency relief to those affected by the storm. In addition to medicine, we have provided tons of temporary shelter material, hygiene items, clothing, and other critically needed items.

“I prayed all the time that God would help His people,” Mary said. “Then Samaritan’s Purse came with so many things we needed. I was overwhelmed by His goodness.”

    PLEASE PRAY

  • That the physical needs of cyclone survivors will be met.

  • For the Christians in Myanmar who are tirelessly and courageously working to provide help.

  • That the Lord Jesus Christ will be glorified through our efforts.
