More than 10,600 Bible reading groups have been established by Samaritan’s Purse in South Sudan as part of a campaign to distribute 260,600 Scriptures throughout the country. The Bible Distribution Project is putting God’s Word into the hands of people, sparking church attendance, and even generating literacy campaigns in villages across the nation.
“This is by far the largest Bible distribution to be carried out in Sudan at one time,” said Ryan Boyette, the Samaritan's Purse Ministry Coordinator in South Sudan. “We give God all the glory.”
Samaritan’s Purse has trained thousands of people from local churches to lead the reading groups. People who join the groups receive free Bibles. For many, it is the first they have ever owned.
Through the Bible study groups, Christians are being discipled and non-believers are being saved.
“Before, I was not a believer and I used to go the witch doctor,” said Robert Makier, who lives in the Dinka Bor village of Dhiakuei. “But now I depend on God for help because I am learning His words.”
Pastors are seeing a new enthusiasm for learning among members of their congregations, as people arrive with Bibles in hand.
“Now that people have Bibles there is a big turnout every Sunday,” said Martin Sebit, a church leader in Tomoret. “Now the people have their personal Bibles so they can read for themselves.”
The project also has generated a literacy campaign. People in the study groups are learning to read, using the Bible as their primary text.
“The desire to learn to read is high,” Ryan Boyette said. “The Bible distribution has created a momentum in the hearts of the people to lean to read their own language so that they can understand God’s Word.”
- That unsaved people who join Bible reading groups will receive Jesus as Savior.
- That village churches will grow as people who received Bibles gather for worship, Bible study, and prayer.
- That illiterate people will learn to read, using the Bible as their primary study guide.
