Bora could barely catch her breath when Samaritan’s Purse staff first met the little girl. The shy 8-year-old could not manage a smile and had lost the ability to walk unassisted because her body was doubled over in constant pain.

Her mother had brought her to our distribution center on the outskirts of Goma to receive food, but it was clear that her life depended on immediate medical care.

We transported her to a Christian hospital, where she was diagnosed with tuberculosis of the spine. She received a plastic splint to straighten her torso, and began a life-saving medication regimen.

The treatment requires a trip to the hospital every two weeks for six months. Samaritan’s Purse is helping with food and transportation costs to ensure that Bora receives the treatment she desperately needs.

Samaritan’s Purse has been working to provide emergency relief since an escalation in the long conflict between the government and rebel forces last August forced thousands from their homes. Many are women and children who fled to churches looking for refuge. Others are sleeping in makeshift camps.

Along with food, clean water, and shelter, the most urgent need has been medical care. For Bora, it was a matter of life or death. The disease that had taken over her body already had caused many of her vertebrae to crumble, and it was just a matter of time before her breathing would have stopped.

As our staff shares the compassion of Christ with this precious little one, they are seeing hope return to both mother and daughter. Across the language divide, they are communicating the Good News through word and deed.

Although still very shy, Bora now smiles sweetly when they enter the room and pray for her.

“Our only desire is that Bora and her mother would be drawn closer to the Lord because of the care we’re providing,” said a staff member.

    PLEASE PRAY
