Responding to Midwestern Floods

Volunteers working with Samaritan’s Purse are seen as an answer to prayer as they help a woman whose home was damaged by the devastating floods in the Midwest U.S.

When Barbi Crabb returned to her Columbus, Indiana, home after the floodwaters receded, she found that the insulation beneath her trailer was completely ruined.

Her husband was in Iraq, serving with the military, and she was caring for their three children by herself. She needed assistance but didn’t want to trouble anyone, especially since many of her neighbors were facing similar situations.

“I don’t take help very easily,” Barbi said. “Receiving is not one of my best traits.”

Jimmy Hoppus, Jr., a Christian neighbor, had volunteered to help Barbi and her family. But Jimmy injured his hand helping other neighbors earlier that week, and there wasn’t much he could do.

“I had made a promise to Barb’s husband that I would make sure everything was done,” Jimmy said. “So I said, ‘Lord, I made a promise to this lady, and you gotta help me.’”

The next day, a group of volunteers working with Samaritan’s Purse pulled into the trailer park and asked if anyone needed help. Jimmy knew it was an answer to prayer.

“I saw Jesus in those people,” he said.

After removing the wet insulation, the group prayed with Barbi and gave her a Bible they all had signed. Barbi rededicated her life to Jesus Christ that day. She said she hadn’t been inside a church for five years, but has since started attending a local fellowship with Jimmy and his wife each Sunday.

Our U.S. Disaster Relief staff and volunteers helped hundreds of people like Barbi in the aftermath of some of the worst flooding the region has ever experienced.
We began working in Iowa, Indiana, and Wisconsin as the floodwaters began to recede, removing mold-infested carpet and drywall from homes, and sealing the remaining structure to prevent mold from returning.

“I appreciate everything they did,” Barbi said. “Everything I received God sent to me.”

    PLEASE PRAY

  • For flood victims who are going through the recovery process.

  • For the volunteers who serve with our Disaster Relief Units, and that the Lord will give them opportunities to minister as they work.

  • That everyone we help will recognize the goodness of God.
