Angel silently watched as the team of Samaritan's Purse volunteers worked on her tornado-damaged home.

A massive tornado devastated Mena, Arkansas, in April. The twister followed a path more than 40 miles long. It destroyed 300 homes in the town of 5,000, and damaged more than 600.

Samaritan's Purse responded by dispatching a Disaster Relief Unit from our North Carolina headquarters. Our staff and volunteers nailed tarps on wind- and tree-damaged rooftops, cut up and removed felled trees, and hauled off debris.

We helped more than 200 people, including Angel and her family.

Angel looked on as a group of volunteers swarmed on her roof, nailing down a tarp that would keep the rain out and prevent further damage. She watched as another group played in the yard with her son, a special needs child.

When the work was finished, she listened as the group prayed and presented her with a Bible. She seemed to be holding back her emotions.

The following day, she was ready to talk when two chaplains from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association Rapid Response Team stopped by for a follow-up visit.

She told them of the struggles she and her husband had with their son, and how the storm had affected them. She showed them the Bible she had been given and started asking questions about salvation. She had read a few Scripture references left by our team, and wanted to know more.

The chaplains told her the Gospel message. She understood that Jesus had come to earth to save sinners. She prayed to receive Him as her Savior.

“Angel was ready,” said one of our staff. “She had seen the love of Christ on her roof and in her yard playing with her son.”

    PLEASE PRAY

  • For the people in Mena like Angel who are trying to recover from the storm.

  • That whenever Samaritan's Purse responds to disasters, everyone we help will see the love of Christ.

  • That those we help will be open to the Gospel message.
