When Mary received a Bible in Nuer, one of the most widely spoken languages in South Sudan, she clutched it tightly and placed it over her heart.
“My Bible was lost during the war,” she said. “My Father in Heaven has given me this Bible today.”
Samaritan’s Purse is working to restore South Sudan physically and spiritually. We are rebuilding churches that were destroyed during the civil war, giving once persecuted believers a place to worship. And through our Bible project, 250,000 Scriptures in six languages will be placed in the hands of Sudanese believers like Mary, many of whom never have owned a Bible nor had a translation in their native language.
The Bible project is done in conjunction with local churches. Pastors and church leaders come for a day-long session to learn the fundamentals of leading a Bible study. They are encouraged to invite friends, church members, and neighbors. Some will walk as many as three to four days to attend the training.
They are taught how to help others study the Bible and draw practical applications to daily living. During one session, a trainer named Jonathan Siega held a Bible above his head.
“This is how we are going to change the world,” he said. “This is how we are going to begin. You need to read this Bible every day, but not just read it—do what is says!”
As an added benefit, Bible groups also encourage literacy training. Group members who are semi-literate or who want to learn to read are using the Bible as their primary textbook. Samaritan’s Purse has started 8,000 Bible reading groups.
“Our goal is to transform lives through the reading and study of God’s word,” said Samaritan's Purse Bible distribution coordinator Meg Carter. “We have brought 250,000 Bibles into South Sudan. If just four people gather in a reading group with one Bible, that will mean that one million people are reading the Bible. That has to make a difference!”
- That everyone who receives a Bible will be doers of the word, and not hearers only.
- For Sudanese believers who are trying to change their country through the Word of God.
- For all Samaritan's Purse projects helping persecuted Christians in South Sudan.
