Biblical Literacy Classes Lead to Salvation in South Sudan

January 9, 2020 • South Sudan

South Sudanese are learning to read for the first time, and as they do, they're reading the Bible and growing in their faith.

Puya and her three children fell into an enemy ambush while trying to flee from the Nuba Mountains in Sudan. Only a few days before, the militia had killed her husband in the middle of the night.

Puya became a Christian through our literacy classes.

The family was arrested and refused any food for six days. Puya feared they would die. “I didn’t have anything. I was empty,” she said.

Puya did not understand until just a few months ago the reason they were released and their lives were spared all those years ago—the mercy of God.

Puya, now age 70, recently became a Christian after hearing the Gospel through the Samaritan’s Purse Biblical literacy and discipleship program. Our teams are training church leaders across South Sudan to teach literacy using the Bible. We’re also providing Bibles and a teaching curriculum.

Now, Puya realizes that God was with her even during captivity. “God is the one who brought me out,” she said. “I have seen the miracle of God.”

“I have seen the miracle of God.”

Puya didn’t know how to read or write until she joined the Samaritan’s Purse class, and she is enjoying the opportunity to grow in her faith through Bible reading. “The Bible is encouraging me. All the words touch me,” she said. “I feel the love of God in my heart.”

Growing in Faith

Another student in her class, Mara, has believed in Jesus Christ for nearly 20 years but was unable to study the Bible. She came to faith through hearing the Gospel and listened very carefully when people read the Bible aloud.

Mara is being stregthened in her faith now that she can read the Bible for herself.

Everything is different now that Mara can read the Bible for herself.

“It’s a new life,” she said. “The Bible will give you power.”

Mara is 66 years old and has lived in Yida refugee camp for almost 10 years. Both her husband and her sister’s husband died during war.

Although the family struggles to meet their basic needs, Mara experiences joy reading the Bible and sharing her faith. She often meets with one of her literacy teachers outside of class to practice her reading, and then they go together and share the Good News in their community.

Like Mara and Puya, many of our literacy students are older adults who have lived through horrific wars and devastating poverty, which robbed them of educational opportunities. Mara prays that the next generation will have a brighter future, with more resources for learning, and will “stand firm on the Word of God.”

“It’s a new life. The Bible will give you power.”

Marko, one of Mara and Puya’s teachers, helped lead several students in his class last year to trust in Jesus Christ. “I’m very happy when I see people become Christians,” he said.

A number of Marko’s family members, including his brother, died as a result of war. Despite the loss Marko has experienced and the horrendous things he saw during war, he trusts God and believes the Gospel continues to change lives. “The power of God is working for my people,” he said.

Mara is grateful for the Samaritan’s Purse teams that are training teachers like Marko and investing in the lives of families in her community.

“We are very thankful God sent you,” she said. “We were blind, but now we are able to see.”

Note: We praise God that a total of 309 people so far have received the Lord Jesus Christ through the Biblical literacy and discipleship program in South Sudan.

Please pray that more people will come to faith in Jesus Christ as they learn to read the Word of God.
