Bunj Hospital, a medical facility supported by Samaritan’s Purse, treats the sick and injured in an area where more than 200,000 people live, including over 110,000 refugees who have been driven from their homes in Sudan.
Dr. Evan Atar is on call 24 hours a day at Bunj Hospital in South Sudan. He is the only full-time surgeon in an area where more than 200,000 people live, including over 110,000 refugees who have been driven from their homes in Sudan.
Patients often walk for days to reach the hospital and wait in line to receive medical care.
As he makes his daily rounds on the wards, Dr. Atar encounters a variety of cases, from malaria to gunshot wounds.
Dr. Atar was pleased when Samaritan’s Purse added a new operating theatre and patient ward to Bunj Hospital, increasing the number of beds from 15 to 60, but the hospital often makes room for more than 100 patients.
Medical volunteers like Drs. Warren and Lindsey Cooper are an answer to prayer when they come to Bunj Hospital on short-term assignments.
