Baptist Medical Centre is located in the town of Nalerigu in rural northeast Ghana.
Baptist Medical Centre is a 300+ bed hospital and there are approximately 13 hospital buildings and 13 medical wards, including medical, OB/GYN, surgical, ICU, pediatric, isolation, and TB. The hospital is open 24 hours a day to receive emergency cases. Approximately 200 to 400 patients are seen each weekday (MWF). There is also a mobile dental clinic, staffed by Ghanaians, doing primarily extractions and cleanings three days per week. Expatriate staff includes a U.S. boarded surgeon. There are two full-time Ghanaian general practitioners.
There are (2) major operating rooms and (2) minor operating rooms. Minor operations are performed on those admitted. Elective surgeries are performed on TTH and emergency surgeries as needed 24/7. On average, 1,200 major surgeries and 2,500 to 3,000 minor surgeries are performed each year. There is no portable X-ray available in the operating room.
Spinal, Ketamine, Propofol, and Local (Lidocaine, Marcaine, etc.). The only anesthesia machine is an old EMO machine. Monitoring equipment is available.
Ultrasound machine with linear array, phased-array, and vaginal probes. Digital X-ray is available. No CT or MRI capability.
No lab on site.
Common Diseases/Trauma
TB, malaria, typhoid, arthritis, hypertension, and snakebite.
Lab tests
Malaria, Hepatitis A & B, HIV, and urinalysis. Other tests such as CBC (FBC), ESR, RA, blood type and cross, electrolytes, AST, TSH, and fasting blood sugar are available, depending on reagent availability. Lab tests are only ordered on patients admitted to the hospital.
Opportunities for teaching by short-term volunteers are limited.
Fly into the capital city of Accra. The following morning, fly to the city of Tamale and then drive two hours to Nalerigu. Orientation includes staff introductions, a hospital tour, and a copy of the formulary.

While English is the official national language, the major people group around the hospital is Mamprusi, whose language is Mampruli. There are more than 10 other languages spoken in the region.

The rainy season is May through September. The harmattan, a dry desert wind, blows from December–February. The average daytime temperature is 92°F.

Housing options include several houses and a central guesthouse. The guesthouse has five bedrooms and four bathrooms with hot, running water. Some bedrooms have air conditioning. Washers and dryers are available.

Lunch and dinner are cooked for volunteers. Breakfast items are available in the kitchen. Meals include basic American and Ghanaian foods.
