The California pediatrician has\r\n                                                                dreamed for years of\r\n                                                                serving in overseas medical missions. Already familiar\r\n                                                                with Samaritan\u2019s Purse and its medical arm World Medical\r\n                                                                Mission, she decided to attend the 2019 Prescription for\r\n                                                                Renewal conference in Florida to investigate what the\r\n                                                                organization had to&nbsp;offer.<\/p>\r\n                                                            <div class=\"bottom-image\">\r\n                                                                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.theark.cloud\/sp-comm-arkfiles\/website\/on-call-article-pages\/bolivia-amazon-bason\/linda-eldred.jpg\"\r\n                                                                    style=\"width: 100%; max-width: 100%;\">\r\n                                                            <\/div>\r\n                                                            <p>\u201cI wanted to find out if this is where I belonged,\u201d said\r\n                                                                Eldred. \u201cI was super impressed. I liked the people. I\r\n                                                                liked the mission work they were doing.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                            <p>Eldred spoke with World Medical Mission staff and\r\n                                                                expressed interest in volunteering somewhere that was\r\n                                                                not too far from the United States. The staff\r\n                                                                recommended a couple of options that they considered\r\n                                                                ideal for a&nbsp;first-timer.\r\n                                                            <\/p>\r\n                                                            <p>She signed up to serve on the Ruth Bell riverboat, a\r\n                                                                floating clinic that provides medical and dental care to\r\n                                                                people who live in remote villages in Bolivia\u2019s Amazon\r\n                                                                basin. Unfortunately, COVID forced the cancellation of\r\n                                                                all scheduled river trips for 2020 and needed repairs\r\n                                                                kept the boat docked in 2021. The physician rescheduled\r\n                                                                that trip for April 2022. She had already arranged to go\r\n                                                                to El Salvador for a two-week assignment in January at\r\n                                                                the Shalom Family Medical&nbsp;Center.<\/p>\r\n                                                            <div class=\"bottom-image\">\r\n                                                                <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.theark.cloud\/sp-comm-arkfiles\/website\/on-call-article-pages\/bolivia-amazon-bason\/boat-photo-from-Dr.-Reid.jpg\"\r\n                                                                    style=\"width: 100%; max-width: 100%;\">\r\n                                                            <\/div>\r\n                                                            <p>\u201cSuddenly I had two trips scheduled for the first part of\r\n                                                                2022,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was the opportunity to do what I\r\n                                                                have always wanted to&nbsp;do.\u201d<\/p>\r\n                                                            <!-- Gallary Flexbox with Text Box (End) -->\r\n                                                            <p>Eldred stayed at an orphanage adjacent to the clinic and\r\n                                                                enjoyed interacting with the children. Most of her work\r\n                                                                at the clinic and orphanage involved conducting annual\r\n                                                                physical exams and well-baby&nbsp;visits. <\/p>\r\n                                                            <p>Less than three months later, she was on a plane bound\r\n                                                                for Bolivia. Joining Eldred on the World Medical Mission\r\n                                                                team were a family medicine physician and her assistant\r\n                                                                from Canada, a nurse, and dental hygienists. The boat\u2019s\r\n                                                                Bolivian crew included the captain, medical staff, a\r\n                                                                logistics coordinator, two cooks, and a translator. Their first destination\u2014two days into\r\n                                                                the journey\u2014was the village of Gundonovia that is home\r\n                                                                to about 45&nbsp;families.<\/p>\r\n                                                            <p>Villages sometimes are alerted ahead of time that the\r\n                                                                boat is coming, but inhabitants don\u2019t know the exact day\r\n                                                                since a lot depends on the river\u2019s fluctuating water\r\n                                                                levels. \u201cThe people knew we were there soon after we\r\n                                                                arrived. One toddler had\r\n                                                                suffered a broken collar bone from a tumble down the\r\n                                                                wooden steps outside her home. Another patient Eldred\r\n                                                                helped treat was a 6-week-old boy who was seriously ill\r\n                                                                with a lung&nbsp;infection.\r\n                                                            <\/p>\r\n                                                            <p>\u201cIt\u2019s 12 hours by motorized canoe to the nearest hospital\r\n                                                                in Trinidad. It wasn\u2019t practical for him to go, and his\r\n                                                                parents couldn\u2019t afford it anyway. They\r\n                                                                also handed out Bibles and shared the&nbsp;Gospel.<\/p>\r\n                                                            <p>For cases in which patients were too sick to walk out to\r\n                                                                the boat, the doctors ventured into the village to make\r\n                                                                house calls. One day they visited three residents: a man\r\n                                                                who was suffering from shingles, an elderly man who had\r\n                                                                limited mobility due to a previous stroke, and a woman\r\n                                                                who was recovering from a traumatic&nbsp;childbirth.\r\n                                                            <\/p>\r\n                                                            <!-- Quote Container (Start) -->\r\n                                                            <div class=\"quote-container\">\r\n                                                                <div class=\"quote\">\r\n                                                                    <p>\"You have to be\r\n                                                                        flexible, because you\u2019re not going to be doing\r\n                                                                        the same\r\n                                                                        kind of medicine that you practice in the United\r\n                                                                        States\r\n                                                                        or Canada.\"\r\n                                                                    <\/p>\r\n                                                                <\/div>\r\n                                                            <\/div>\r\n                                                            <!-- Quote Container (End) -->\r\n                                                            <p>Learning to treat patients despite limited resources\r\n                                                                proved challenging, but that is a valuable lesson for\r\n                                                                service in any medical mission setting. \u201cYou have to be\r\n                                                                flexible, because you\u2019re not going to be doing the same\r\n                                                                kind of medicine that you practice in the United States\r\n                                                                or Canada,\u201d advises Eldred. \u201cYou have to tell yourself\r\n                                                                that we will do the best with what we have and what we\r\n                                                                can do. If you agonize over what could be done in a\r\n                                                                first world country, you\u2019re wasting time\r\n                                                                and&nbsp;energy.\u201d<\/p>\r\n                                                            <p><strong>\u201cYou definitely pray more,\u201d<\/strong>\r\n                                                                she&nbsp;said.<\/p>\r\n                                                            <p>Eldred is interested in future short-term volunteer\r\n                                                                opportunities with World Medical Mission and Samaritan\u2019s\r\n                                                                Purse. Before her next adventure, she wants to work on\r\n                                                                improving her Spanish-speaking skills.
