It could be a child, an\r\n                                                        adult, a pregnant lady, an elderly&nbsp;person.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>For most of the year, Knights works in a\r\n                                                        rural hospital in Queensland in the Australian\r\n                                                        Outback.You might say she is wired for\r\n                                                        adventure, as she seeks out every opportunity to\r\n                                                        explore medical missions in challenging&nbsp;places.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Kudjip Nazarene Hospital in Papua\r\n                                                        New Guinea was her most recent trip with\r\n                                                        World Medical Mission\u2014her third to that\r\n                                                        destination. She has also served at two of our\r\n                                                        partner hospitals in Togo, at Nkhoma Mission\r\n                                                        Hospital in Malawi, and at Kapsowar Mission\r\n                                                        Hospital in&nbsp;Kenya.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>From her home in central Australia, Kudjip\r\n                                                        is a somewhat convenient one day's journey.\r\n                                                        Traveling to the hospitals in Africa, depending\r\n                                                        on which side of the continent, can take up\r\n                                                        to three&nbsp;days.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>When Knights made her first trip with\r\n                                                        World Medical Mission\u2014a three-month\r\n                                                        assignment at Hopital Baptiste Biblique in southern Togo in 2019\u2014it was also her first\r\n                                                        mission trip anywhere on the&nbsp;globe.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cBefore then I had had no contact with any\r\n                                                        overseas missionaries and had never even heard\r\n                                                        of Togo,\u201d she&nbsp;said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Knights was fresh out of residency training,\r\n                                                        and although her experience in Togo involved\r\n                                                        a \u201csteep learning curve,\u201d she left inspired by\r\n                                                        \u201cthe dedication and God-centered attitude of\r\n                                                        every person\u201d she&nbsp;met.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Craving another chance to serve, she had\r\n                                                        planned her next trip to Papua New Guinea.\r\n                                                        However, the pandemic canceled those plans,\r\n                                                        and Australia went under lockdown for nearly\r\n                                                        two&nbsp;years.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>The physician racked up a significant\r\n                                                        amount of eligible time off by working\r\n                                                        extended hours that included Christmas and\r\n                                                        other holidays. Finally, in November 2022, she\r\n                                                        made her first trek to Kudjip. She returned in\r\n                                                        March 2023 and again in&nbsp;November.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cThe long-term missionary doctors and their\r\n                                                        families have been so welcoming to me. It's\r\n                                                        a lovely feeling when you arrive somewhere\r\n                                                        and you are automatically enveloped into the\r\n                                                        community,\u201d she&nbsp;said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cThe nurses remembered my name and\r\n                                                        were so happy that I came back. That really\r\n                                                        warms my&nbsp;heart.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>That continuity brings comfort, as each\r\n                                                        assignment\u2014even to the same hospital\u2014offers a new set of experiences and&nbsp;challenges.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <figure>\r\n                                                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sp-comm-arkfiles.s3.theark.cloud\/website\/on-call-article-pages\/ready-for-discharge\/img\/Little-girl-post-malaria_sm.jpg\">\r\n                                                        <figcaption><strong>One of Knights' patients<\/strong> was this child who\r\n                                                            recovered from a severe case of malaria, the\r\n                                                            leading cause of death in Togo.<\/figcaption>\r\n                                                    <\/figure>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>In Togo, emergency medicine was her\r\n                                                        focus. She delighted in observing hospitalized\r\n                                                        patients show improvement day by day, and\r\n                                                        she rejoiced when she could finally say her\r\n                                                        favorite phrase: \u201cYou are ready for discharge.\u201d\r\n                                                        In Malawi, she mainly treated patients in the\r\n                                                        male medical ward. When she arrived in Papua\r\n                                                        New Guinea this past November, Kudjip staff\r\n                                                        needed her help in the outpatient&nbsp;clinic.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Knights thrived on the variety of patients\r\n                                                        and health conditions that came through the\r\n                                                        clinic, and most involved happy&nbsp;outcomes.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>One was a 7-year-old boy who had suffered\r\n                                                        seizures since infancy. He came to the hospital\r\n                                                        two months earlier after having a seizure\r\n                                                        that caused him to fall into a fire. During\r\n                                                        that hospitalization, he received anti-seizure\r\n                                                        medication and was treated for his&nbsp;burns.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>When Knights saw the boy for his two-\r\n                                                        month checkup, his mother said he had not\r\n                                                        had a single attack\u2014until he ran out of the medication. The mother had spent the past\r\n                                                        three days trying to get him back to the\r\n                                                        hospital, braving bad weather and washed-\r\n                                                        out roads while mostly traveling on&nbsp;foot.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cShe was so happy that she had made it to the\r\n                                                        hospital,\u201d said Knights. \u201cShe knew that with the\r\n                                                        medicine, her child would not have&nbsp;seizures.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Starkly different and heartbreaking were\r\n                                                        the surprising number of cases of adults who\r\n                                                        had been admitted to Kudjip after attempted\r\n                                                        suicides. Knights said one favored method is\r\n                                                        swallowing a pesticide that is ultimately fatal, but\r\n                                                        it takes two to three days before death&nbsp;ensues.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cThere is this awful period when you know\r\n                                                        the patient is going to die, but he is sitting\r\n                                                        up in bed and looking quite well during that\r\n                                                        initial time,\u201d Knights explained. \u201cWe knew\r\n                                                        there was nothing we could do for these\r\n                                                        patients to save their lives, but we admitted\r\n                                                        them to the hospital knowing we had an\r\n                                                        opportunity to share the Gospel with&nbsp;them.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <div id=\"above-the-top\">\r\n                                                        <!-- THIS CAN BE ANYWHERE INSIDE OF <main> -->\r\n                                                    <\/div>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Praise be to God, Knights said that two of\r\n                                                        these patients, a man and a woman, prayed to\r\n                                                        receive Christ as their Savior before they&nbsp;died.<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cThat was so uplifting because, when all is\r\n                                                        said and done, that's the whole reason the\r\n                                                        hospital is there, is to bring people to&nbsp;Christ.\u201d<\/p>\r\n\r\n                                                    <blockquote>\r\n                                                        <p><i>\u201cWhen all is said\r\n                                                                and done, that's the\r\n                                                                whole reason the\r\n                                                                hospital is there, to\r\n                                                                bring people to Christ.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\r\n                                                    <\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n                                                    <p>Knights hopes to go on two trips with World\r\n                                                        Medical Mission in 2024. She envisions her\r\n                                                        God-purposed role as primarily an encourager\r\n                                                        and supporter of the missionaries who give their\r\n                                                        all every day on the mission&nbsp;field.<\/p>\r\n                                                    <p>\u201cI am so in awe of the long-term missionary\r\n                                                        doctors.
