Mission Organization<\/h3>\r\n

Alian\u00e7a Evang\u00e9lica de Angola (Evangelical Association of Angola). Supported in North America by Advancing the Gospel in Angola (AGA).<\/p>\r\n \r\n

Perfil<\/h3>\r\n

As a church-related health care institution, CEML seeks to provide medical services for an estimated 50 percent of Angolans who currently have no alternative coverage. Since its opening in 2006, Centro Evangelico de Medicina do Lubango has served over 57,000 new patients. The 53-bed acute care facility includes a 24-hour emergency ward, seven consulting rooms and treatment area, administration, lab and x-ray with digital capability, two OR theaters and a large ward with eight semi-private beds. CEML has grown to 152 staff, with three general surgeons, two family doctors, five interns, and two trainees in the General Surgery program approved by PAACS. It is planned that the hospital will be expanding to 130 beds and four OR rooms by the end of 2025.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

El viaje<\/h3>\r\n

Volunteers will travel via commercial airline to Luanda, Angola, with an additional domestic flight from Lubango to Luanda. The international and domestic airports are separate. The volunteer coordinator at CEML will arrange for transportation between the two. Upon arrival in Lubango, a CEML Hospital representative will provide transportation to lodging \u2013 approximately 20-minute drive. Upon departure, volunteers will return to Lubango the day before returning home.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

Visa<\/h3>\r\n

Visa on arrival for volunteers serving up to 30 days, which can then be renewed two times if necessary. If planning to serve longer than 30 days, volunteers will obtain a tourist eVisa prior to leaving home. It is recommended volunteers serve for either less than 30 days or more than 35 days; maximum service time is 90 days.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

El clima<\/h3>\r\n

Weather during winter months (May–August) is cool, mid-40\u2019s F at night and 65-75 F by day. This season is very sunny and dry; no rain. The summer months (October–April) are generally warm, with temperatures in the 60s at night and between 70-90 degrees F during the day. The summer brings rain, which can be quite heavy.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

The official language of Angola is Portuguese.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

Religion in Angola is diverse, with Christianity being the most widely professed faith. Roman Catholics make up approximately 41 percent of the population with an additional 43 percent consisting of other denominations such as Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, and others. Since their independence, several Pentecostal and Evangelical churches have been established. Other \u201cAfrican Christian\u201d churches exist and the indigenous Tokoist faith, as well as a small Muslim minority due to immigrants, who do not generally form a community.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

El alojamiento<\/h3>\r\n

Volunteers will stay in homes of CEML expatriate staff or in the on-site CEML and\/or SIM guesthouses. If staying with hosts, daily travel to the hospital will be arranged by the host or hospital driver.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

La alimentaci\u00f3n<\/h3>\r\n

Volunteers staying in the CEML visitor housing will have previously prepared meals (freezer meals) available that require very little preparation. These meals are a mix of American fare with other dishes with an Angolan influence. Breakfast ingredients will be available for use and lunch will be provided at the hospital during the work week. Volunteers staying with host families will have meals prepared by the host. Individuals with food restrictions and\/or allergies should inform the WMM Placement Coordinator and\/or Logistic Coordinator during the planning process.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

Medical Licensure<\/h3>\r\n

No in-country licensure required.<\/p>\r\n \r\n

Required Vaccines\/Prophylaxis<\/h3>\r\n

Yellow fever vaccination is required. Other strongly recommended vaccines include typhoid, Hepatitis A&B, and rabies. It is also recommended for volunteers to bring their own HIV prophylaxis. Malaria prophylaxis is mandatory–volunteers should avoid Mefloquine.<\/p>\r\n \r\n <\/div>\r\n <\/section>\r\n
