Myungsung Christian Medical Center, Ethiopia – Clinical Microbiologist

An experienced clinical microbiologist needed at Myungsung Christian Medical Center  and medical college in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to oversee initial setup and operation of microbiology laboratory.

Major state-of-the art equipment  is already setup and a clinical microbiologist  is needed to get lab up and running and to establish protocols for lab technicians. 

Room and board in safe environment with excellent weather offered. Korean, American and Ethiopian staff.  Ten minute drive to international airport.  Looking for 3-6 month or more commitment.

MCM is located in the eastern part of Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. It is a 248 bed facility (40) surgical, (25) medical, (20) pediatrics, seven OBGs, ten ER and (11) Intensive Care. MCM offers ophthalmologic, dental and hemo-dialysis services as part of community health programs. Long term expatriate staff include three American general surgeons, one American FP,  two Korean OBGs, one US pathologist, one Norwegian plastic surgeon, one Korean neurosurgeon, one US orthopedic surgeon, one Canadian pediatric surgeon, one Korean nephrologist, one Korean radiologist,  one Korean ophthalmologist, and 2 Ethiopian dentists. There are approximately 30 Ethiopian GPs and specialists.

Fly by commercial air to the city of Addis Ababa. It is a short drive on paved roads to the hospital. Upon arrival at the hospital, volunteers are briefed by one of the physicians they will be working with. A short tour of the hospital is given by one of the hospital administrators or a physician. Further orientation is provided by a chaplain and inter-action with expatriate and national staff.

Amharic is the official language. Also spoken are English, Somali, Arabic and many others. There are 86 languages spoken in Ethiopia.

In 2015 the hospital opened a brand new 5 story Grace Wing of the hospital with the prime location of the third floor designated for a new dental department equipped with five new dental chairs. They have Panorex x-ray equipment and denture workshop. The hospital has two Ethiopian dentists, a few dental hygienists and trainees as well. They also have a Korean technologist who can produce dentures on the premise.

The individual volunteer is responsible for all costs associated with the trip. World Medical Mission personnel will provide assistance in arranging all travel including international flights and in-country travel as well as any needed medical licenses, visas or permits.
