Tenwek Hospital, Kenya—Endoscopy

Tenwek Hospital, Kenya—Tenwek Hospital located in Bomet, Kenya, is a 300-bed referral hospital with a wide range of surgical, medical, maternity, and pediatric services. Tenwek also participates in the Kenyan Family Medicine program that allows volunteers to come that are interested in teaching residents. Families are welcome. A minimum service of two weeks plus travel is required; one month service or longer is preferred.

Tenwek has a very active Endoscopy Unit with excellent video endoscopes and a great team to assist as they perform over 2,000 endoscopy exams each year. Their services are greatly needed and appreciated as they place over 300 stents each year for patients with esophageal cancer, which has a very high incidence in this area of Kenya.  The Endoscopy/Research Fellow and the Surgical Residents facilitate ongoing research studies of esophageal cancer and esophageal squamous dysplasia. In addition to patient care and research activities, there are also opportunities for teaching endoscopy skills to African physicians in training. Please note that it is not necessary for you to have ever placed an esophageal stent—the endoscopy team will quickly teach you how to do so!

The individual volunteer is responsible for all costs associated with the trip. World Medical Mission personnel will provide assistance in arranging all travel including international flights and in-country travel, as well as any needed medical licenses, visas, or permits.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please contact Dayna Wright by email or by phone at 828-278-1168.
