Tenwek Hospital, Kenya—General Surgery

Tenwek Hospital, Kenya — Tenwek Hospital located in Bomet, Kenya is a 300-bed referral hospital with a wide range of surgical, medical, maternity, and pediatric services. Tenwek participates in a general surgery residency program (PAACS) and a family medicine program that allows volunteers to come that are interested in teaching residents. A minimum service of two weeks plus travel is required; one month service or longer is preferred. Tenwek is a very family friendly location.

The General Surgery department at Tenwek is one of the largest in the hospital in terms of staffing as well as trainees. Each day Monday-Friday two or three rooms are devoted fully to general surgery cases. There are two surgical teams, red and blue. Each has its own clinic and 2-3 days of surgery per week. At any given time there are 2-3 consultants on each team. The case mix includes many trauma cases, GI emergencies, elective endocrine, and basic neurosurgery. Each night on call there is a general surgery consultant and 2-3 residents as well as an intern. Most nights on call are quite busy with most of the work being accomplished by the residents.

The individual volunteer is responsible for all costs associated with the trip. World Medical Mission personnel will provide assistance in arranging all travel including international flights and in-country travel, as well as any needed medical licenses, visas, or permits.
