Hospital of Hope, Togo

Hospital of Hope has an ongoing need for short term volunteer General Surgeons  who are available for 2 weeks or longer.

Hospital of Hope is located in the northern region of Togo, a country of over 5 million people. Opening in March, 2015, Hospital of Hope is a 60-bed major medical, surgical and acute care facility, and regional trauma center. The bulk of the patients are Togolese, but many come from neighboring Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Benin. Hospital projects to potentially admit 2,500-3,000 inpatients per year with an average of 20,000 outpatient visits per year. The staff is composed of missionary physicians, Togolese physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and nursing, and support staff.

Travel: Volunteers can fly into Lomé, Togo. From Lomé, there is a nine-hour drive by missionary vehicle or taxi to the hospital.

Climate: The weather in Mango is generally hot. Average high temperatures range from the upper 80s to the upper 120s. The rainy season starts in May and ends by October 1st. The dry season lasts from October through April. The very hottest time of the year is March/April where temperatures can get into the 120s by day and down to the upper 80s at night. December through mid-February is very tolerable as the Harmattan winds blow down from the Sahara, causing a constant dusty haze blocking the sun.

Language: Although there are 44 tribal languages in Togo, with French being the official national language used throughout the country. Virtually all official business and teaching is conducted in French. The two primary languages spoken at the hospital are English and French.

Charting: Doctor’s orders are generally written in English or French. Nursing charting is in French and English. Most Togolese staff will speak some English. Translators are available for patient interaction.

Surgery: There are (3) fully equipped operating rooms equipped with basic OR equipment and supplies to perform a broad range of surgeries, Orthopedic capacity, and one small surgery room for endoscopy, casting and minor trauma. Surgeries will be performed every weekday and emergency cases 24/7.

Anesthesia: Regional, Spinal and General. O2 is available throughout the hospital.

Radiology/Ultrasound: Basic x-ray. Mobile ultrasound machine. No CAT scan.

Pathology: No pathology lab on site. Specimens are sent back to the US for review and diagnosis.

Lab tests: Comprehensive lab including bactilab.

Common diseases/trauma: All American diseases, plus tropical are seen. Hospital will be the regional trauma center.

Religion: Islam 90%, Animism (mixed in), Catholicism 3-4%
