Mbingo Baptist Hospital, Cameroon – Pathologists in 2019

Mbingo Baptist Hospital – Cameroon — Mbingo Baptist Hospital is a 310 bed facility located in the Northwest Province of Cameroon. Long term expatriate staff include (1) American general surgeon, (1) American ENT surgeon, (1) American Plastic Surgeon, (1) American internist, (1) Swiss internist, (1) American internist/pathologist, (2) American pediatricians, (2) American family medicine physicians (part-time).  There are also (2) Cameroonian ophthalmologists, (1) Cameroonian ENT surgeon (who is the Chief Medical Officer), (1) Cameroonian orthopedic surgeon, and (14) Cameroonian nurse anesthetists.  The Pan African Academy of Christian Surgeons (PAACS) is training 9 surgery residents and the Christian Internal Medicine Specialization (CIMS) has 10 residents.

There is an URGENT need for interpretation of fine needle aspiration specimens, body fluid cytology, grossing of general surgical specimens and interpretation of H&E stained sections. Currently, the only special stains available are AFB and Gram stain. Reports can be dictated using Dragon Naturally software that is in place. A digital camera is attached to the microscope so that consultation can be obtained if desired using e-mailed images. There is opportunity for the volunteer pathologist to perform the fine needle aspirations or these can be done by residents who have been instructed in the technique if he/she prefers. Finally, didactic lectures given 3 days a week by long-term and short-term personnel are provided for the residents. Contributing 1-2 lectures per week on any subject pertinent to general or tropical medicine, though not required, is very helpful in reducing the work load of the long-term personnel. Volunteers interested in formal teaching should be in direct contact with hospital field staff prior to departure to prepare for their teaching role.

All volunteers are self-funded. World Medical Mission will assist with booking flights, obtaining visas, licensing and in-country travel arrangements.

Mbingo will accept for a minimum two week commitment, not including travel.  There is an urgent need for pathologist help for Mbingo year round. If you have Christian pathologist colleagues please share this need with them also.

If you are an evangelical Christian pathologist currently licensed in the US or Canada and are interested in volunteering to meet this need, please contact Becky Richmond by email or by phone at 828-278-1203.
