ELWA Hospital, Liberia—OB/GYN and Family Practice, ongoing need

ELWA Hospital, Liberia—ELWA Hospital was opened in 1965 and has recently completed a revitalization program through Samaritan’s Purse. The new hospital was dedicated in October of 2016. It is now an 81 bed facility: (20) male medical/surgical, (20) female medical/surgical, (18) pediatrics, (16) post-partum, 7 Labor & Delivery beds.  The medical staff is led by a PAACS trained surgeon. Other medical staff include (6) Liberian and other African physicians, (1) full-time and (2) part-time expatriate physicians, and (1) full-time and (1) part-time nurse practitioners. The nursing, laboratory, midwife, and surgery staff are Liberian.

Climate: The warm season lasts from January to early May, with an average daily high of 91 degrees F and a low of 75 degrees F. The cold season lasts from early July to mid-September, with an average high of 83 and a low of 73 degrees F. Monrovia receives on average 182 inches of rainfall per year, or 15.2 inches per month. The driest time is in January, with the wettest being in June.

Urgent Needs: OB/GYN and FP’s, especially with maternity and C-section experience in order to relieve full-time medical missionaries. Presently, ex-pat medical missionary staff are extremely overwhelmed by the challenging workload. Volunteers will be asked to assist with on call responsibilities. Medical licensing and visa will need to be obtained before departure from the US. This is an ongoing urgent need.

If you are an evangelical Christian OB/GYN or FP currently licensed in the U.S. or Canada and are interested in volunteering to meet this need, please contact Carly Poor by email or by phone at 828-588-1274.
