Tenwek Hospital, Kenya—Radiology

Tenwek Hospital, Kenya—Tenwek’s Radiology Department is an active, vibrant service. At the hospital main campus, approximately 13 “radiographers” supply services for X-ray, Ultrasound, and CT. Tenwek has two rooms with Quantum X-ray machines doing approximately 100-140 plain films/day and currently processed with a CR system. There are two Sonosite Turbo Ultrasound machines, and the sonographers scan approximately 40-60 patients/day. We have recently upgraded our CT services with installation of a new 64 Slice Siemens “Go Up” CT machine. CT volume is approximately 3,500 scans/year (12-16/work day). At our Bomet Annex outpatient center, X-rays are done with a Del Medical DR system, and Ultrasound services are also provided.

All images are archived on a Clear Canvas PACS system, and patient information and reports are managed on a hospital-wide HMIS called Kranium. Our radiologist office features a new computer with two upright monitors, as well as a Dragon Medical dictation system. There is on-site radiologist coverage for approximately 32 weeks/year. During the other 20 weeks, CT scans are read daily by a group of 35 volunteer radiologists in the U.S. using a cloud-based teleradiology system named “Nucleus.” Interventional procedures, such as biopsies or drainages, are performed according to the interest and ability of the on-site radiologist. New visiting radiologists are highly encouraged to come join our efforts!

Tenwek Hospital, located in Bomet, Kenya, is a 300-bed referral hospital with a wide range of surgical, medical, maternity, and pediatric services. Tenwek participates in a general surgery residency program (PAACS) and a family medicine program, which allows volunteers to come that are interested in teaching residents. A minimum service of two weeks plus travel is required; one month service or longer is preferred. Tenwek is a very family friendly location.

The individual volunteer is responsible for all costs associated with the trip. World Medical Mission personnel will provide assistance in arranging all travel, including international flights and in-country travel, as well as any needed medical licenses, visas, or permits.
