Tenwek Hospital, Kenya—Anesthesiology, CRNA

Tenwek Hospital, Kenya—Tenwek Hospital located in Bomet, Kenya is a 300-bed referral hospital.

Given the high volume of surgical cases 24/7, the anesthesia department is quite busy. It is staffed by nurse anesthetists and clinical officer anesthetists. A wide range of modalities are used including spinal and other regional blocks, local anesthesia, and general anesthesia. An anesthetist is assigned to every room on normal working days and two anesthetists are on duty at night and on weekends. Visiting anesthesiologists are usually assigned to work with the anesthesia staff for a few shifts prior to being given solo responsibilities. Since there is no full time anesthesiologist, the surgeon OR director is overall responsible for the anesthesia services.

The individual volunteer is responsible for all costs associated with the trip. World Medical Mission personnel will provide assistance in arranging all travel, including international flights and in-country travel, as well as any needed medical licenses, visas, or permits.
