Curtailing Work in South Sudan

Samaritan’s Purse is forced to evacuate staff because of escalating violence

Due to growing insecurity and open conflict, Samaritans Purse is forced to curtail services to those living in South Sudan.

Over the past week fighting had spread from the nation’s capital of Juba to multiple locations throughout the country. The fighting is both political and ethnic. Hundreds have died and tens of thousands are displaced.

We have evacuated over 70 expatriate employees. Our staff of 800 South Sudanese will strive to maintain services to the more than 500,000 beneficiaries who are recipients of food, water, medical care, and nutritional programs.

Samaritan’s Purse has worked and served the people and churches of the region since 1993. We intend to continue helping meet emergency needs in South Sudan as security allows.

This Christmas, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, we pray for peace for South Sudan and its people. We pray that God will give wisdom and humility to the leaders of the various political factions so that reconciliation and peace may be found in the world’s newest nation, South Sudan.
