Dorothy Letterman Bishop - Richmond, VA

Dorothy “Dot" Mae Letterman Bishop, a beloved Mother, Grandma, Great-Grandma and friend, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at the age of 93, to be with her Lord and Savior. Her family celebrates her well-lived life with profound gratitude.

Dot was born October 20, 1931, in Johnson City, Tennessee, to the late Roy Letterman and Veina Garland Letterman. She was the third child of five children. She was a 1951 graduate of Clearmont High School, Burnsville, North Carolina.

At an early age, Dot professed her faith in Jesus Christ and while living in Richmond, Virginia, she was active with Warwick Road Baptist Church and Clover Hill Baptist Church, where she was a dedicated member for over 30 years. Dot married the love of her life, Thomas “Tom” Berkley Bishop, Sr., February 7, 1956, Tom passed away in May of 1982. Their enduring love story was blessed with three sons. Dot loved spending time with her family bringing great joy to her life. As a result of her devout faith, love of family, and beautiful smile, she was loved by many. Her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her.

Dot lived in the Richmond, Virginia area for over 60 years before moving to Warrenton, Virginia. Dot loved music and was an accomplished musician who loved to sing and enjoyed playing the piano and guitar. A woman of many talents, Dot enjoyed successful careers; beloved teacher at Warwick Christian Schools, secretary at the Baptist Foreign Mission Board, and working and teaching young people was also a love of hers. Following in her Grandmother's footsteps, Dot was an accomplished seamstress, quilt maker, needle crafter and known for her baking and cooking talents. She was an active and faithful member of Trinity Baptist Church in Warrenton, Virginia.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Tom, Dot was preceded in death by her siblings, Leona Miller, Evelyn Smith, Lee Letterman, and Gerald “Jerry" Letterman. She is survived by her children, Thomas B. Bishop, Jr. (Kathy), Jeffrey D. Bishop (Betsey), and Barry L. Bishop (Ellien); as well as five grandchildren; Lauran B. Holmes (Shane), Henry Bishop, Claire Bishop, Matthew Bishop and Bryce Bishop (Jennie); six great-grandchildren; many beloved nieces and nephews; and many lifelong friends. She also has a large extended family in Western North Carolina who she cherished dearly.

The family would also like to thank Kim Kline and Bernie Plebuch for their compassionate care to mom and our family during her illness. We also extend appreciation to Lake Manassas and all who cared for her during her final days.

A celebration of life service will be held Friday, May 30, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. at Clover Hill Baptist Church, 3100 Courthouse Road, N. Chesterfield, Virginia, with her cousin, Pastor Keith Letterman officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, starting at 11:00 a.m. Graveside will follow the service at Dale Memorial Park, 10201 Newbys Bridge Road, Chesterfield, Virginia.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 31, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, 8803 James Madison Hwy., Warrenton, Virginia. Bliley's Funeral Home, Chippenham Chapel, Richmond, Virginia is serving the family. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.blileys.com
