Betty Jo Walker Cox - Evans, GA

Betty Jo Walker Cox, 94, left for her heavenly abode Monday, July 30, 2023, at ER at Sweetwater, North Augusta, South Carolina.

She was a former resident of Chilhowie, Virginia, retired to Melbourne, Florida, and was the daughter of the late Mahlon Clark Walker and Rae Nell Lee Walker.

Mrs. Cox was a graduate of Georgia Baptist School of Nursing, Atlanta, Georgia, as a RN. She served a lifelong nursing career, and retired from Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health, Abingdon, Virginia. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, Melbourne, Florida, and finally established membership at Abilene Baptist Church, Martinez, Georgia, after her relocation to Evans, Georgia, with family.

Mrs. Cox is preceded by her husband of 49 years, Hugh Preston Cox; and was the sister of the late Alma G. Betenbaugh, Geraldine W. Blackburn, and Dennis Eagan.

She is survived by one daughter, Sally Rae Cox; two siblings, Rosemary Fischer, and Wiley G. Walker; two granddaughters, Jennifer Lynn Smarr and Jeanne Leigh Prescott; one grandson, Joseph Tyler Smarr; four great-granddaughters, Elizabeth Marie Hughes, Briana Noelle Przedecki, Kaelyn Shay Smarr, and Alyssa Peyton Przedecki; and four great-grandsons, Tyler Howard Hughes, John Riley Hughes, Elijah Thomas Smarr, and Logan Case Hughes.

Graveside Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, August 6, 2023, in the Beattie Section of Westwood Memorial Gardens, Chilhowie, Virginia, with Pastor Bobby Dunn officiating. Those attending the service are asked to gather at the cemetery by 1:20 p.m., Sunday. Celebration of Life services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, August 5, 2023, at the Washington Commons Chapel, Evans, Georgia, with the Rev. William F. Harrell officiating.
