“Who can find a virtuous woman? For her worth is far above rubies!” Proverbs 31:10 describes the life of Doris Ruth Carrington. Known as Sweetheart, Mom, Granmomma, GG, and Aunt Doris to her family, she entered heaven’s gate on her 94th birthday, Feb. 17, 2021. Soft hymns played as Doris died peacefully surrounded by her four daughters as they prayed, releasing her into Jesus’ arms.
Doris Ruth Hefner was born to Mae Belle Seely Hefner and Floyd L. Hefner on Feb. 17, 1927, in Fort Worth, Texas. She graduated from Paschal High School and worked for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and received the Employee of the Year award, retiring with 20 years of service.
Doris met Brodie W. Carrington, Jr. in 1944 in Fort Worth. They dated for four months before B.W. joined the U. S. Navy to serve his country in World War II. The two sweethearts corresponded for two years. Finally, when the war ended, Doris hopped aboard a train and traveled to Norfolk, Virginia, to wed B.W. in a small Lutheran chapel, with no family or friends to witness the ceremony on April 26, 1946. Doris and B.W. were married for 52 years. They loved to garden and camp in their motorhome. A favorite destination was Ruidoso, New Mexico, where they eventually bought a vacation retreat. Traveling was their favorite pastime. B.W.’s last dream destination was the Holy Land, and God granted the desire of his heart to visit Israel. However, he died of a heart attack in Tiberias by the Sea of Galilee on Jan. 16, 1998.
Doris and B.W. lived in White Settlement, Texas, for 52 years. They were blessed with four girls, Carole Jean, Debra Ann, Judy May, and Letricia Dee. “Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also praised her (Proverbs 31: 28)." Even though the years after World War II were lean, Doris provided nutritious meals that included fresh garden vegetables and homemade pies and cakes. She sewed beautiful dresses for her girls. She made holidays special, especially Christmas!
Doris epitomized the Proverbs 31 woman: she was of noble character, her husband lacked nothing of value, and she brought him good all the days of her life. She worked with eager hands and went about her work vigorously, extending her hand to the needy. She spoke with wisdom, and faithful instruction was on her tongue. Though Doris possessed both charm and beauty, she was a woman who feared the Lord and is to be praised! (paraphrase of Proverbs 31:10-31)
Doris Ruth Carrington was preceded in death by her husband, mother, father, sister Norma Jean Hefner Welch, close cousin Juanita Fulbright who was like a sister, and son-in-law, David Russell Shipley.
She is survived by her children, Carole and Kenneth Shaw of South Lake, Texas; Debra and David Struckman of Lavon, Texas; Judy (Shipley) and Robert Myers of Arlington, Texas' and Letricia Dee and Larry Rosamond of Sulphur Springs, Texas. Her niece, Linda Welch Gallegos, was like a daughter to her. Her grandchildren include Jeff and Millie Shaw, Andrea Shaw, Victoria and Jared Arp, John David Struckman, Paul Struckman, Laura (Shipley) and Jeff Wilson, Mindy Ray and Nathan Myers, Jennifer and Tim Grumbles, and Jordan and Jenna Hahn. Great-grandchildren include Olivia and Forrest Shaw, Hannah Struckman, Dallas and Kash Struckman, Brody and Nathan Wilson, Savannah and Walker Grumbles, and Aubrey Hahn.
