D. Sean Baer, 49, was killed in the line of duty on April 9, 2024.

At the time of his death, Sean was serving as a special agent for the U.S. Postal Service, Office of the Inspector General (USPS OIG), a position he held for nearly 10 years. He began his law enforcement career in 2004 as a judge advocate in the U.S. Coast Guard, where he specialized in military justice, as well as maritime and international law. In 2008, he left active duty to become a special agent for the Diplomatic Security Service at the Department of State. From 2008-12, Sean served in the New York field office in Manhattan specializing in passport and visa fraud investigations, then served as the assistant regional security officer at the U.S. Embassy in Libreville, Gabon. Sean later served as a special agent at the Department of Commerce and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Sean was presented the 2023 USPS OIG Award for Excellence in Investigations and the 2022 USPS Assistant Inspector General Office of Investigations Excellence Award. His personal military awards include the Coast Guard Commendation Medal and the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Sean graduated magna cum laude from Syracuse University in 2002, earning a juris doctorate (JD) and a master’s degree in international law and diplomacy. He also earned a master’s degree in strategic intelligence from the National Defense Intelligence College in 2010, a master’s degree in global studies from Humboldt State University in 1999, and a bachelor’s degree in strategic studies from Evergreen State College in 1997.

Those who knew him, even briefly, will remember Sean for his keen intellect, quick wit and endless desire to learn. He loved reading and traveling, and excelled at trivia games. He also enjoyed camping, collecting survival gear and taking road trips in his Jeep. Sean could talk to anyone about anything, and he possessed a compassionate and generous heart. Above everything, Sean was a devoted and loving husband, father, son and brother. He will be sorely missed.

Sean is survived by his wife, Lineka; three children, Alexander, Evelina and Vivienne; mother and stepfather, Gretson and Cyril Barber; father, Ronald Baer; sisters, Britt and Brenna Baer; nephew, Randall Sanchez; mother and father-in-law, Linda and John West, and many other family members and friends.
