Samaritan’s Purse Responding to Myanmar Monsoons

More than 380,000 households throughout Myanmar were displaced in last year's floods.

We’re working through partners to assist families struggling in the aftermath of some of the country’s worst floods in decades.

A little more than a year ago, devastating floodwaters critically affected more than 1.6 million people in Myanmar, and this year’s monsoon season has left areas of the Southeast Asian country again underwater. More than 400,000 people have been affected, and 40,000 acres of rice fields are flooded.

Samaritan’s Purse is working through a network of church partners to provide basic food items to thousands of families in Ayeyarwady Delta. The low-lying delta region in southern Myanmar is the country’s leading rice producer and is bearing the brunt of floodwaters.

Rice is a staple food for Burmese families, and when waters damaged more than 970,000 acres of farmland last year, many families in the delta were left without their only food source. They had to eat seeds reserved for planting, setting themselves up for a food shortage this year.

Last year, Samaritan’s Purse also provided food items including rice and oil to thousands of families in impoverished areas. Families are still recovering from last year’s disaster, intensifying the impact of this year’s monsoon floods.

Please pray for our staff and church partners as they assist victims of one of the worst floods in Myanmar in decades. Please pray that Samaritan’s Purse will show tangible expressions of Christ’s love as we offer physical and spiritual relief.
