Celebrate Moms

All mothers deserve to be celebrated, but many moms are faced with the harsh reality of having to risk their lives just to give birth and then seeing their babies and young children die needlessly from malnutrition and preventable disease. It doesn’t have to be this way.

A Message From Cissie Graham Lynch

Celebrating Mothers Around the World

Chan’s daughter was just one month old when she was forced to flee into the jungle. She remembers how the dense vegetation cut into her bare feet and the cries of her baby and two other young children still ring in her ears.

Not only did the Khmer Rouge brutally kill millions of Cambodians—they also worked to destroy the bonds between parents and children.

“My husband was taken by the soldiers,” she said. “I never saw him again.”

In the years that followed, Chan struggled to provide for her little family and hoped that her children wouldn’t be killed by the ruthless Khmer Rouge regime that had taken over Cambodia and stolen her husband. “I am sure that he was tortured and killed,” she said. “They did this to so many innocent people.”

Not only did the Khmer Rouge brutally kill millions of Cambodians—wiping out generations of grandmothers, mothers, teachers, and doctors—they also worked to destroy the bonds between parents and children. “They threatened the young ones to spy on their parents,” said Chan. “Soon, there was no love, only fear.”

The Khmer Rouge was driven from Cambodia nearly four decades ago, but their evil legacy remains as a new generation struggles to care for themselves and their children. Tens of thousands of women die each year while giving birth, and nearly half of all children under 5 have stunted growth because of severe malnutrition. Women are often terrified of becoming mothers.

“They threatened the young ones to spy on their parents,” said Chan. “Soon, there was no love, only fear.”

Samaritan’s Purse is working to restore the joy of motherhood in Cambodia. We have built two new birthing centers for women to safely deliver their babies, and we’re teaching them the benefits of breastfeeding, how to cook nutritious meals, and the importance of making sure their children drink clean water. Most importantly, we’re sharing the message of unconditional love through the Gospel. As these women accept Christ as Savior, they are also sharing their new faith with their children.

Cambodia is just one of a dozen countries where Samaritan’s Purse is making a difference in the lives of mothers. You can help us. Please pray for women around the world and please prayerfully consider how you can celebrate moms around the world by supporting our work.

“..a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.”
(Proverbs 31:30, NKJV).
