James Michael “Jim” Kohl, 74, devoted husband, loving father, cherished grandfather, and faithful servant of Christ, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, just three days shy of his 75th birthday. Born on September 19, 1950, in Elgin, Illinois, to John and Eleanor Kohl, Jim grew up in Palatine, where his story of love and faith began. At the age of 16, Jim met the love of his life, Jan, and the two were inseparable from that moment on. Their 55-year marriage stands as a testimony of unwavering devotion and partnership.
A master carpenter and craftsman, Jim built more than homes — he built a legacy. Through his business, he designed and constructed custom estate homes by hand, each piece a reflection of his meticulous skill, creativity, and integrity. Jim also built the family home on their Christmas tree farm in Cary, working side by side with Jan and their children to create a place filled with love, laughter, and faith and continues to be the gathering place where the Kohl family lives out the traditions and togetherness he so deeply valued. Yet, it was not just wood and stone that Jim shaped; it was lives. He gave his time, talents, and resources generously, often in quiet ways, offering his master skills to his church, to missions, and to anyone in need.
Jim’s faith was the cornerstone of his life. A devoted Christian from a young age, he lived every day with purpose, ensuring every word, action, and dollar was aligned with building God’s kingdom. A leader in small groups, an active volunteer and a supporter of ministries both local and global, Jim exemplified generosity — often giving anonymously. He supported Samaritan’s Purse, Moody Bible Institute, Harvest Bible Chapel, and created a widows' support and home care ministry, and countless others, knowing his impact would reach far beyond his own lifetime.
When not working or serving, Jim found joy in the outdoors. Later, he built the family’s vacation log cabin in Wisconsin where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and making maple syrup together with his son Nathan. His faithful companion, his dog Ranger, was often by his side during his many outdoor pursuits.
Above all, Jim treasured his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Jan; his children Nathan (Julie), Rachael (Dean), and Becky; and his six grandchildren, Kate, Collin, Allie, Levi, Mollianne, and Emma Jane, who brought him endless pride and joy. He is also survived by his brothers, Mark (Carol) Kohl and Ken (Karen) Kohl. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, John and Eleanor Kohl.
Jim’s life was one of hard work, generosity, and faith. He was confident in his eternal reward, longing for the day when he would hear the words of his Savior: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
