When Hurricane Helene hit North Carolina in September 2024, Dumitru and Dina Gyska lost everything they depended upon for their livelihoods. Dumitru’s efforts toward building his year-old plumbing business were shattered in a matter of minutes as floodwaters and debris swept through his property in Buncombe County.

“We came here in 2004 from Moldova. We bought this house in 2009. We were in the house when the hurricane hit Asheville. We lost everything,” he said. “I had a working van full of tools and the water just came and took the van. I lost all the tools. The van was smashed.”
