Margaret Carpenter, age 74, of Augusta passed away at Bronson Methodist Hospital on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. She was born in Groningen, Netherlands, on January 20, 1949, and was the daughter of Jan and Frouke (Weesies) Meersma. Margaret's family immigrated to America in February of 1957. Upon arrival at Ellis Island in New York, her family moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, under the sponsorship of a local Presbyterian church.
Margaret graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and married David A. Carpenter on November 3, 1967. They were blessed with nearly 57 years of marriage together. Margaret also enjoyed her many years of work at Russ’ Restaurant in Portage and at Michigan State’s Brook Lodge Conference Resort in Augusta.
She was preceded in death by husband, David, on October 27, 2023. She is survived by her daughter, Heather (Mike) Wall of Clarkston, and her two grandchildren; Olivia Wall of Tennessee and Seth Wall of South Dakota. Margaret also has three surviving siblings: Pieter Meersma, Harry Meersma, and Anke (Meersma) Harvey. Other siblings that preceded her in death include: Klaas Meersma, Hendrick Meersma, Evelyn (Meersma) Canfield, Jan Meersma, Dirk Meersma, and Elisabeth (Meersma) Aldrich.
Upon meeting Margaret, it did not take long to learn that she had a feisty disposition and a great sense of humor. She routinely provided husband Dave with daily tasks to accomplish, but oh how she cherished their drives to South Haven and Clarkston on a sunny day! Her home was always spotless, and she genuinely enjoyed preparing delicious, gourmet meals and hosting family and friends. Without question, nothing compared to the love she had for her family and two grandchildren. Most importantly, Margaret (Omie) loved Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior. How comforting to know that she is physically healed and in Heaven today!
At Margaret’s personal request, a small family gathering took place but no services are planned.
