On November 6, 2024, Steve Hughes, a man of deep faith, integrity, and boundless love, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, surrounded by his beloved family. Born in 1944 in Turtletown, Tennessee, to Rufus and Helen Hughes, Steve grew up with strong values that shaped the foundation of his life—a life marked by dedication, hard work, kindness, and a spirit of adventure.
Steve excelled as a student, earning the honor of valedictorian in high school, before pursuing an engineering degree at the University of Tennessee. His career as an electrical engineer led him to Atlanta, where he met and married the love of his life, Karen, affectionately known as “Doll.” Together, they created a life rich with love, faith, and adventure, leaving an indelible mark on everyone they encountered. Steve loved and cherished every second with Karen, until his last Earthly breath.
Their journey together included many adventures, from riding Harleys, to boating the Tennessee river, to sailing the serene waters of the British Virgin Islands. Family was the cornerstone of Steve’s life. A devoted father to Chris, Matt, and Ashley, he was also a loving father-in-law to Lisa, Tori, and Eric. As a grandfather, Steve cherished every moment with his seven grandchildren—Tyler, Dori, Jackson, Cate, Connor, Brayden, and Emmy—passing on his love for the ocean, the spirit of adventure, and the joy of family during treasured summers at their Florida beach house. They could feel the love from him and will carry that with them the rest of their lives. He is also survived by his beloved younger sister, Phyllis, who grew up with Steve in Turtletown - their relationship always marked by being there for one another. A close and unique bond with Karen’s father, Pete, also brought Steve great joy. Pete was not only his father-in-law but also one of his dearest friends, sharing many meaningful moments - primarily based around “fixing things” together.
Throughout his life, Steve’s steadfast Christian faith guided his actions, marked by kindness, integrity, and compassion. His wisdom, warmth, and unwavering values left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Steve Hughes will be remembered with love as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. His legacy of faith, love, compassion and integrity will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his memory will forever remain in their hearts.
