South Sudan
South Sudan is a country in central Africa that gained independence from Sudan in 2011. Civil conflicts have displaced millions of residents from their homes. Samaritan’s Purse began distributing gift-filled shoeboxes there in 1998 and launched The Greatest Journey, our follow-up discipleship program, in this nation in 2013.

A boy named Juma from South Sudan said, “I want to thank God and thank the person who sent to me a hammer and a tool kit. I was using a stone or wood for hammering, but when I opened my shoebox, I found a hammer in the tool kit box. I was so happy, and I am using it now to do my work.”
Also, 12-year-old Meama said, “I received a shoebox and later started The Greatest journey. Through these 12 lessons, I learned a lot of things like respect, being honest, obedience—and then I gave my life to Jesus. Since then, my life is different. Even my family members came to church and thanked my teacher for what God has done.”

Please don’t stop praying for the boy or girl that you first lifted up when you packed your shoebox. Continue to ask God to soften his or her heart to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, so that he or she will follow Him all the days of their life. Pray also for families and entire communities to be transformed as God’s love is shared through your simple gift.
The Greatest Journey
